Handling .tar.bz2 Files

Both tar and bzip2 are used on many versions of Unix and Linux. tar puts files into an archive without compressing them and then bzip2 takes care of the compression. You first have to decompress the archive with bzip2 and then unpack it with tar.

Here's the routine..

bzip2 -d filename.tar.bz2
tar -xvf filename.tar

Done.
