Linux Mint uses a program called Fortune to place 'jokes' and small ASCII-based pictures at the top of the shell (screenshot) . It's kind of cute in a simpering way, but makes my NERD ALERT beacon glow a bit too brightly. And it takes up half the frickin' terminal. Here's how to remove it.
Mint uses the Bourne Again SHell for its terminals, so edit BASH's config file bash.bashrc as the root user, using your favourite text editor:
sudo vi /etc/bash.bashrc
Scroll down to the very end of the file and look for a line which says /usr/bin/mint-fortune and hash it out:
#/usr/bin/mint-fortune
Save and exit the editor.
Done! Goodbye fortune messages..
